When there is a work event, or you finally get to go out and see your friends, it doesn't mean that you have to abandon your goals and derail your progress. Guilt and restriction are not on the guest list and you can have a great time at these events without them. Here are some tips:
1. Don’t “save calories” for later
a. Skipping meals beforehand can lead to overeating and impulsive choices
b. Eat a high protein meal beforehand so you can keep your hunger in check
i. No time? A protein shake might be your best friend here
2. Pick smart food and drink options
a. Booze: Lighter options are better, think vodka soda, straight liquor (not shots on shots, more like “sippers”)
b. Food: find the protein and veggies first, then you can indulge in the extras of you want
c. If you can, find the grilled, baked, or steamed proteins
3. The one plate rule can be helpful
a. Fill your plate once with a balance of protein, fiber and a treat or two
b. Avoid standing by the snack table – this can lead to mindless snacking
4. Slow down and be present
a. Mindful eating can be handy here, take your time and listen to your body
b. Focus on your friends, the work presentation (no matter how boring), or the fun people you get to network with
5. Don’t let this one event totally derail you
a. A lot of people get this “fuck it” mindset when they have something coming up, don’t let this one meal or weekend of events for work throw off your whole week
b. When the event is over, get back to the normal routine – no guilt required

Enjoying yourself at social events while staying relatively on track is possible with a little bit of flexibility and some mindful choices.
